Hakuseki  Iwai

ー“Kizami” is the process of carving images onto a wood block with a chisel, just like drawing with a brush. The wood block is made of Japanese katsura tree, which is suitable for fine carving. Instead of drawing a sketch on it in advance, Hakuseki directly carve the image he had in mind. Therefore, all pieces are one-of-a-kind original pieces. "Woman," "Sitting person," "Mother and child,” “Family” with the theme of human love, and also “Flower” and “Fuji” with nature theme are drawn by carving lines over and over again to express their "existence", and life is breathed in.

Born in Osaka, Japan.

Hakuseki Iwai is a seal carving artist and western-style painter.

He studied calligraphy and seal carving under Shujo Kataoka, mastered Qin Han seals, and discovered his own unique method under the influence of Zhao Zhiqian and Wu Changxian.

He started to exhibit mainly overseas and has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the British World Exhibition in 1987. Received the first Houou Encouragement Award in recognition of cultural exchange through art. Since then, he has been exhibited in China, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Portugal, Italy, and other countries. In 2003, a stone monument, which is calligraphy work, was erected at China-Japan Friendship Museum in Guilin, China, and in 2004 his work "Sanka Suicho Kaichiki” is collected in the British Museum.

He also studied western-style painting under Toshiya Inoue. Also as a painter, he won numerous awards in art contests including Grand prix at the “All Kansai Art Exhibition”, a series of self-portraits “One Day”.

Fusing Japanese, Asian and western art, Hakuseki will continue to show us his unique pieces of Kizami-e.
