Shinji Nakahori
中堀慎治
After graduating from university, Shinji Nakabori vaguely started drawing. Without any purpose or conviction for what to draw, he continued to create in a small, shabby worldview. In the middle of winter in Kyoto, he saw a statue of *Miroku-bosatsu-hanka-shiyui at Koryu-ji Temple. When he confronted the statue as if it were being drawn to him, he was attacked by a strange feeling that the space was being distorted. It was the moment when he shared the feeling of transcending time and space with people from the past that have been standing in front of the statue for 1200 years seeking salvation. Things that transcend time, things that reach people's hearts. It was the moment when the confusion cleared up. Since then, that phantasmagoric figure has been my guidepost. He believes that it is his mission to pursue and shape that “something” that reaches people’s hearts.
